NAAAP-OC hosts food drive for the WGYB in partnership with UPS and the Red Cross
This week UPS employees came to GCHope headquarters to deliver food collected from a food drive hosted by the NAAAP-OC. Here’s what Margaret Lim NAAAP-OC Community Outreach Chair had to say:
As the Community Outreach Chairperson for National Association of Asian American Professionals – Orange County (NAAAP-OC), I can say emphatically that the food drive was made possible due to the participation of volunteers and the involvement of several community-oriented organizations: 281 participants donating food boxes or backpacks of specified food items, Disney for the ingenious idea of offering Disney tickets to registrants performing qualifying volunteer service, UPS employees volunteering on their own time to load the donated food in a UPS truck at the collection site and deliver it to the Giving Children Hope warehouse, and the Orange County Red Cross for allowing NAAAP-OC to use its facilities as a collection site for the food donations.
What caused you to get involved?
I was convinced this was the project for NAAAP-OC to undertake after reading the stated goal of the program: “To meet the needs of children in Orange County identified as homeless by continuously providing a stable and nutritious source of food to carry home during the weekends along with providing them with nutritional education.”
Instead of collecting any food, Giving Children Hope is encouraging the consumption of more nutritious and less sugary food for the needy families.
Who was involved in planning this food drive?
The Community Outreach Committee planned the food drive by making it a Give a Day Get a Disney Day volunteer opportunity and then partnering with the Orange County Red Cross to hold the food collection on its premises and with UPS to provide the delivery service of the donated food to Giving Children Hope.
How many people participated?
Since 281 food boxes / backpacks were collected at the food drive on April 5, there were at least that many participants who donated food. Besides them, four NAAAP-OC members helped with the check-in and four UPS employees loaded the food onto the delivery truck.
Engaging and participating with the community-at-large is one of NAAAP-OC’s mission. As the Community Outreach Chair, I regard it as my responsibility to create opportunities for the members to connect with the community through volunteer service. We can make leaders by empowering people to serve the community and make a meaningful difference.
