Communities from remote villages in El Salvador are often the most vulnerable to contracting various communicable diseases and illnesses. The principal causes of death in this region are gastroenteritis, influenza, malaria, measles, pneumonia, and bronchitis, caused or complicated by malnutrition, bad sanitation, and poor housing. In 2005, it was reported that communicable diseases were the major causes of death in rural areas, particularly among children.
People from rural communities are reported to pack lunches and walk for up to three hours in order to be seen at local clinics. To address these needs, Giving Children Hope is partnering with Hand in Hand Outreach and Clinica Medica in San Juan Opico, El Salvador, to bring healthcare and medical attention to these communities.
In the city of San Juan Opico, this general medicine clinic sees between 5,000-6,000 patients each month. This clinic offers various treatments such as renal failure/dialysis, diabetes, high blood pressure, traumatology/trauma center, optical, OBGYN, general pediatrics, basic geriatric care, and basic treatment for HIV patients.
