Massive floods in the Philippines have been triggered by tropical storms from July – December.
Recent reports indicate over-flown rivers in early December near Washi that have displaced 429,000, killed approximately 1,200 people. About 37,000 Philippine residents are still in evacuation centers.
Furthermore, officials have reported close to 300 cases of Leptospirosis, a water-borne disease. So far only 8 have died from this, but with flood waters spreading throughout the Philippines for 5 months, it is likely to increase.
Officials are reporting that these series of storms were the hardest hitting storms in 60 years.
Giving Chidren Hope donated LifeStraws and pharmaceuticals to Project LIGT, who left for the Philippines last Friday to serve those affected by the Typhoon that battered the southern part of the country last month. These LifeStraws and lifesaving pharmaceuticals will aid the survivors of this typhoon.
GCHope is working to send a container of disaster relief supplies, hygiene products, emergency disaster beds, water purification supplies, and more.
Please consider sponsoring this container to help bring relief to the flood victims. You may also sponsor LifeStraws in order to provide clean drinking water to the communities affected the most by the floods.
A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck the central regions of the Philippines in Dumaguete on Negros Island. Damage reports have not yet been released; however, it is reported widespread panic in neighboring regions.
A tsunami warning has also been issued, though authorities do not expect a tsunami to occur. Similar sized quakes in nearby regions have spawned tsunamis in the past.
The BBC reports “buildings in the cities of Cebu and San Carlos shook violently and sustained damages such as broken windows and cracks on the walls…Two aftershocks measuring 4.8 and 5.6 magnitude on the USGS scale followed within half an hour of the earthquake.”
Giving Children Hope is contacting partners on the ground in the Philippines to assess the situation, take note of damages and prepare for reports of current needs.
Please stay updated as more information becomes available.
