GCH Responds to Earthquake in Peru

On Wednesday evening, August 15, 2007, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake shocked Peru. Giving Children Hope was quick to respond to the disaster.

Former GCH Board Member, Marius Peyre, a native from Peru, contacted GCH to begin relief efforts. The first trailer loaded with 20 tons of much needed medications, blankets, food items and hygiene items left Friday afternoon to Long Beach. It will then be shipped down by boat to Callao, Peru.

The supplies are going to assist approximately 40,000 quake victims to administer to the immediate needs. The value of the relief efforts is approximately $300,000 in wholesale value.

Friday afternoon network media KABC Eyewitness News and Telemundo were on hand to report of the activity.

A local resident in Yorba Linda, CA saw the news report and responded. She delivered tarps to our Buena Park location to pack in our next container of relief goods tentatively scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Along with the tarps she delivered a yellow back pack that she used while working in the Peace Corps in Peru many years ago.

When asked why she was compelled to personally deliver items she shared that in her experience working through local government often meant that the items were never delivered to the people actually in need. When she heard that GCH partners with individuals on the ground, she had full confidence that her items would be delivered exactly where they are needed.

Later in the day, local Orange County residents from Peru delivered many items to assist those in their home country. They had planned on driving to LA but after seeing the Eyewitness News Report they were able to come to our Orange County location.

If you would like to contribute to the relief efforts, we are collecting items on Monday from 9-5 and on Tuesday from 9-12. Please check the list of needed items. Due to government regulations used clothing cannot be accepted. New clothing, blankets, and tents are among the most needed items. Your monetary donations are also greatly needed to assist in relief efforts. We are also in need of volunteers on Tuesday to pack boxes of delivered items to be loaded into the container. If you would like to participate in the relief efforts, please call our office at 714-523-4454.

Thank you for your partnership in assisting the Peruvian people!
