Children’s Craft Items Help Haiti
Innovation Center, a part of Julian Charter School in Encinitas, hosted a unique fundraiser that allowed children to create a variety of items for sale. All proceeds from the craft sales were designated for Haiti relief and recovery efforts of Giving Children Hope.
Ileana Mangoutas of Innovation Center told GCHope that each grade level was responsible for making a different product to sell. Kindergarteners made oil canvases, First and Second graders created tile coasters and the upper-level classes made specialty stationery.
This creative fundraiser was able to raise more than $340 for Haiti relief!
Ileana Mangoutas found Giving Children Hope through Cottonwood Church, who have been partners in the Haiti relief efforts since the quake struck in January.
A big thank you to Innovation Center, its unique idea, talented children and creativity that makes Haiti relief and recovery efforts possible!
PIMCO Helps Haiti
Every year PIMCO has their annual, Take Your Kids to Work Day for elementary-age children. PIMCO has incorporated giving back to the community in past events and this year decided to highlight the tragic earthquake in Haiti. PIMCO employees were at GCHope headquarters on Martin Luther King Day sorting life-saving medical supplies that were being transported daily into Haiti for the relief efforts. In order to bring this event to the kids they decided to host a hygiene drive. They collected items that were needed for the kids to pack.
On Thursday April 22, 80 children of PIMCO employees came to work with their parents. They participated in different sessions where they learned how bonds worked and learned about culture diversity which including partaking in conference calls at different PIMCO International Offices. To learn about Haiti, Jenise Steverding from Giving Children Hope was on hand to talk about her experience in the IDP camps. She gave some trivia about the Haiti earthquake and all together the kids counted out loud to 36 to simulate how long the earthquake lasted. Then the kids were told that they had nothing left but the clothes on their back and some sheets and boxes to make their new home. Each of the groups of children had fun making tent cities in the PIMCO lobby. Then the kids hand-decorated bags and placed hygiene products in them. These products will be transported and then distributed to people in Haiti.
In addition, the PIMCO Foundation made a generous $5,000 Haiti relief efforts.
GCHope was thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful event and see elementary age children giving back to kids they will never meet. These bags are sure to provide hope to many kids in Haiti!
