Giving Children Hope Supports “Awesome Girls” Mentoring Program

In June, 2007, Giving Children Hope partnered with an inner city New Orleans mentoring program called “Awesome Girls.” Executive Director, James Rogers, welcomes 20-30 young girls between the ages of 11 and 19 into the “Awesome Girls” center at St. Mark’s Church each day after school. The “Awesome Girls” program conducts a number of activities focused on health, nutrition and personal wellness, filling a void that was left in these young lives following Hurricane Katrina. Giving Children Hope shipped a truckload of backpacks filled with food to launch the ‘We’ve Got Your Back’ program in New Orleans!

In October, 2007, Giving Children Hope President and CEO, John Ditty, traveled to New Orleans with a team of Orange Lutheran High School students to rebuild homes and visit GCH projects on the ground. The “Awesome Girls” center was one of his first stops! John Ditty and a team of Orange Lutheran students were welcomed with a party, as the “Awesome Girls” were preparing for their first field trip: a canoeing and camping expedition atop a nearby island. For many of the young ladies, this would be their first time out of the city. John Ditty and the students brought along a second delivery of food and invited the girls to join them next time they were in New Orleans; rebuilding houses that were destroyed by the storm. The “Awesome Girls” were very excited for a chance to help with construction and have a hand in rebuilding their neighborhood.
