Nearly every day of the week, individuals come to Giving Children Hope’s distribution center to visit our Mission Store and obtain basic medications and supplies that are in desperate need in many parts of the world. Often we are unsure of where these items go – but today we received a wonderful report about items that were distributed in Zimbabwe. The letter was so wonderful that we wanted to share it with our faithful partners – you. Your donations enabled medications to reach the Tonga people and minister to their needs through the Sierra Madre Congregational Church. Thank you for your support of Giving Children Hope!
Dear Friends at Giving Children Hope,Our short term team has just returned from Zimbabwe, where we partnered with local pastors and their churches to bring practical assistance and spiritual encouragement to the Tonga people of the Binga area. We were deeply challenged by the dedication and vibrancy of the Church there, but also by the great physical needs.
I want to convey to you their appreciation, as well as my own, for providing us the opportunity to deliver some basic medical treatment to these dear brothers and sisters. The local medical facilities are completely out of basic supplies, and it is predicted that the region will be facing famine within 6 months. The Tonga people have seen little if any outside assistance in the last 10 years.
Before our departure, team members had visited your Mission Store for vitamins, pain relievers, band aids, gauze and tape, eye drops, antibiotic ointment, and various other basic supplies, by the shopping cart full! We were delighted to be able to receive these much needed items at a donation fee that stretched our cash donations to make the maximum possible impact! These supplies, combined with donations from other medical professionals and church supporters, enabled us to take 5 large suitcases of medical supplies with us.
In conjunction with the special church meetings and school programs, with permission of the area doctor, and under the leadership of our experienced team nurse, we conducted clinics on 5 days in 5 different locations. Our facilities ranged from a thatched roof-only church to a school classroom. Though our resources were limited, we prayerfully ministered to over 1000 patients during this time. This was a powerful experience for us as we were able to listen and learn more about the difficulties and challenges facing the Tonga people, and pray with them. I believe it will prove to have been a life-changing experience for our teens and adults alike.
Thank you again for the wonderful provision of the medical supplies. You were a blessing to our Sierra Madre Congregational Church team and to the Tonga people of Zimbabwe.
Sincerely,
Becky Scoon
