Update from Houston

Here is an update from our partner, Jana from Lindale Assembly of God:

We feed, on the average of 40 to 50 families every week. FAMILIES! The number dramatically increases with bad weather, because so many are day laborers who work outside when the weather is good. It’s been very rainy lately. Our pantry is very low.

P.S. My new stoves are the BOMB! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Jana

Giving Children Hope will be sending a container of food, water and other needed supplies at the end of this month.

Shipment of Aid Leaves for Houston

Giving Children Hope is only able to make these shipments possible with your help!

Cooking Equipment Ships

Giving Children Hope, with the help of Imperial Manufacturing, has sent cooking equipment to ministries in the Gulf Coast that have helped their communities in the recent disaster relief efforts for Hurricane Ike. The ministries include long-time partners Lindale Assembly of God in Houston, TX, Colossians Christian Center in Beaumont, TX, and Friend Ships in Lake Charles, LA.

The shipment included brand new cooking equipment, food and drinks to help each organization with their community outreaches.

Frozen Chicken Shipped to Gulf Coast

Giving Children Hope, in partnership with Feed the Children, has helped send thousands of pounds of frozen chicken in Louisiana to those who needed it most post-Hurricane Ike.

The frozen chicken was sent to homeless shelters and churches including the Daily Bread Pantry, New Orleans Dream Center, Bridge House Thanksgiving Dinner, New Orleans Mission, Mt. Olive AME Church, and Center of Hope; all located in Louisiana.

The chicken was also distributed in Galveston, TX by our partner Friend Ships to help those who were devastated the most by Hurricane Ike.

Relief Leaves

Giving Children Hope has sent a shipment of disaster relief to the Star of Hope Rescue Mission in Houston, TX. This shipment is in response to the damage Hurricane Ike left behind.

Another Update from Our Partner in Houston

Last week, Michael Chertoff, Secretary of Homeland Security, came to visit our partners Randy and Jana Meeks in Houston to survey the damage Hurricane Ike had caused to the region.

The Meeks’ church, Lindale Assembly of God, is the only church shelter open in the region. Giving Children Hope in partnership with Union Rescue Mission, has already sent one container of aid to Houston, and will be sending another container of relief tomorrow.

Read the newest ‘Thank You’ Letter from Jana:

The pillows were such a hit. The shoes made a couple of ladies cry (in a good way). We really needed the blankets and everyone snatched them up like they were fine linen. This has been the best day I’ve had in a long time. I love my part of this partnership. I like it that you send me stuff and then I get to be the one to see how much joy it brings……I get to hear the thank you’s…….I watch the smiles and the feel the hugs. I LOVE MY JOB! You’re gonna love the pictures and the video footage we captured during the give-away… look at the lives you touched and the hearts you blessed. The words “thank you” just seem so lame for what I feel, but I REALLY do thank you for making our shelter a wonderful place to be. I love you all so very much, Jana

Shipment Arrives: A Thank You from Houston

Jana and Randy Meeks received the first shipment of aid. Currently they are the only shelter open in the city. YOU have helped assist them in serving many without a home to go home to. They sent this thank you:

Just in the nick of time!!! The truck came and I did the happy dance! Every pallet contained some kind of answer to prayer. We are so overwhelmed with gratitude for the thoughtfulness of what you sent, Beans, spaghetti, cake mixes, stuffing, cans of vegetables, etc…….I can do so much with these presents. The shampoo was so needed as were the sanitary products and shoes. We had NO blankets….just sheets and not enough of them. And pillows!!!!! How did you know? O, I forgot, through Lord directs your steps. For the first time in days, I feel a huge relief from the constant burden of producing meals from nothing. Tomorrow I will go through the boxes and make gift boxes for each shelter resident and then we will begin the process of distributing some of the shipment to our neighbors who are still without power. We will probably take some to a couple of other local shelters if they actually get up and running. Right now, Red Cross tells us we are the only church shelter in the city. Surely more will come when they get power. Houston has taken a very hard hit, but we have much to be grateful for. We are not destroyed, just bruised and battered. We are blessed to have people like GIVING CHILDREN HOPE and all of your awesome partners to turn to in our time of crisis. You are truly hands of God. Thank you, from the depth of our hearts.

With Sincere Gratitude,

Randy and Jana Meeks

GCH Staff Members Assess Needs in Texas

After Hurricane Ike hit the Gulf Coast, Giving Children Hope sent two containers of disaster relief to Houston, TX where it was hit the hardest and where people from Galveston, TX fled for shelter during the storm.

GCH staff members traveled to Houston, TX to assess more of the needs of those who are still feeling and experiencing the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. eThey visited Galveston, TX which was hurt the most during Hurricane Ike.

GCH staff members also visited long time partners Randy and Jana Meeks of Lindale Assembly of God in Houston, TX. GCH has been partnering with the Meeks since Hurricane Rita in 2005. Read more about our work with the Meeks in Houston

Needs were assessed and partnerships were made with Star of Hope Rescue Mission in Houston and with Friend Ships in Louisiana. Giving Children Hope’s second container of relief went to the Star of Hope Rescue Mission.

Update from Houston, Post-Hurricane Ike

Here is an update from our partner in Houston, TX, a city that was hit hard after Hurricane Ike.

Here is an e-mail we have received from Jana Meeks, our partner at the church:

Hey Guys, we’re in really bad shape here in Houston. We need bottled water, food, paper products, diapers, and cleaning supplies. After the hurricane hit, we had an additional 8 inches of rain. Our city is in crisis. Thanks in advance for whatever help you can give.

Jana
