To continue supporting Haiti after the 7.0 earthquake on January 12, Giving Children Hope is transitioning from an immediate recovery response to a season of long-term reconstruction. As a part of these plans, Giving Children Hope will assist in the following projects:
Clinic
Giving Children Hope is in the planning stages of building a clinic in partnership with Fishers of Men. The Clinic in Haiti will serve the individuals living in refugee camps without immediate access to healthcare or medical services from Port-Au-Prince to Delmas. The clinic will be built in partnership with Cottonwood Church. There is an immediate need for antibiotics among the Haitian communities. More shipments will be sent to meet these needs.
Shelter
Portable shelters are extremely important to the individuals living in the ruins of the affected cities. As the majority of volunteer medical support leaves Haiti, many Haitian individuals are left to the refugee camps. Without proper shelter and structures, there is a great risk for infections of wounds, illnesses and many more ailments. These temporary shelters will assist in keeping communities healthy and safe.
Pharmaceuticals
Alongside the portable shelters and the construction of a new clinic, Giving Children Hope plans to send packages of pharmaceuticals, medicines and medical supplies with teams into Haiti to ensure proper delivery and distribution to the individuals and communities with the greatest needs.
Orthopedics
Orthopedic supplies are also in high demand. After the earthquake, many individuals in the devastated communities acquired severe wounds. For this reason, wheelchairs, crutches, canes, walkers and braces are greatly needed. These items will be included in recent containers sent to Haiti.
Food
Aside from medical supplies and equipment, shipments of food have been requested with various partners on the ground in Haiti. Most food products were difficult to cultivate in the dry, harsh agricultural climate before the earthquake and remains increasingly difficult after the disaster. Rice and Beans were sent from the Giving Children Hope facility in the weeks following the earthquake and will be continuously sent to Haiti.
Micro-Enterprise
In addition, once shelters have been constructed, supplies will be sent to Haiti to help communities begin cultivating their own sources of food. In partnership with local warehouses in Haiti, Giving Children Hope will send supplies and equipment for community bakeries to open. This micro-enterprise project will provide sustainable food for the communities affected by the disaster, stimulate the depleted economy and create much needed jobs. Costs will vary to reflect in-country costs of the food items, supplies and equipment.
These various projects to continue assisting the greatest needs in Haiti are anticipated to help alleviate the overwhelming needs for development and re-development in the country. Partner with Giving Children Hope to help rebuild Haiti.
This Thursday Giving Children Hope will be sending two packages to Haiti to benefit Convoy of Hope and Hope Church, and the Foundation Mission De L’Espoir.
Aid groups are hurriedly delivering medicine and supplies to Haiti due to a sudden cholera outbreak, the first in several decades. More than a hundred people have died, with over a thousand currently being hospitalized.
Cholera is a waterborne, bacterial infection that spreads quickly through contaminated water and causes severe diarrhea and vomiting, both of which can lead to dehydration and sudden death.
The first major health problem since the devastation of the quake, the outbreak is currently confined to the rural Artibonite region, an area of Haiti that contains thousands of quake refugees. Residing in makeshift tarp cities, all quake refugees are susceptible to this disease that can be generated through a lack of sanitation and limited access to clean water.
While hospitals in the region have enough IV treatments for now, they will need assistance in restocking their supplies.

Shipment of additional Haiti relief packages filled with medicines left the Giving Children Hope facility this week on its way to FOOD for the POOR. This shipment, sponsored by Hungry Children Project, will further help in the relief and recovery efforts in the community most affected by the earthquake that struck earlier this year.
This week Giving Children Hope’s CEO, John Ditty, along with Nonprofit Manager, Sean Lawrence and nonprofit partner, Glenn Owen, traveled to Haiti to oversee distribution of recovery supplies. This is John’s third trip to Haiti since the devastating earthquake struck in January.
While there the team will make further assessment of the most critical needs during this time of recovery. Additionally, the team will document distribution of supplies, observe the progress of the rebuilding communities, and meet with current and potential partners to further relationships with the communities in Haiti with the greatest needs.
This morning, Lawrence sent our staff a text message to inform us they are currently distributing medicines and WorldBeds to hospitals in coordination with Compassion International.
Thank you for your continuous support of the releif and recovery efforts in Haiti. Please continue to check updates and current needs as our team returns with more information.
