Giving Children Hope to Host Walk-a-thon for Homeless Children of Orange County

BUENA PARK, Calif. (March 11, 2008) – Giving Children Hope announced their very first 5k walk-a-thon, Walking with Hope, in partnership with First Congregational Church of Buena Park, to benefit the homeless children of Orange County. The walk-a-thon will be held on Saturday, May 17 at the First Congregation Church of Buena Park at 6633 Beach Blvd. Buena Park 90621, across from the Buena Park Civic Center. It is $25 to pre-register; $30 the day of walk.

According to the 2006 Orange County Community Indicators Project, there are over 16,000 homeless children in Orange County. Over 5,000 of these children are ages 5 and under, while over 10,000 are between ages 6 and 17. According to the report, Orange County has the highest proportion of families that are homeless.
This family event will include food vendors, games, raffles, and merchant booths.

All proceeds of the event go to Giving Children Hope’s “We’ve Got Your Back” program, a local program which provides backpacks full of nutritious food for Orange County children that have been identified as homeless and having food insecurity. Elementary students ages 5 to 11 are enrolled in a Nutrition Club and learn about healthy diet and wellness in addition to taking home well-balanced meals to sustain them over their weekends.

Giving Children Hope is an Orange County, California faith-based nonprofit organization engaged in domestic and international poverty alleviation through disaster relief, medical development, vocational training and advocacy.
