Sudanese government forces and Sudan Liberation Army rebels continue to fight a civil war that has led to extreme violence and staggering casualties of its people by the Sudanese government.
According to USAID.GOV, the continuing conflict in Sudan has affected more than 4.7 million Sudanese and forced hundreds of thousands to seek refuge in neighboring countries. In 2004, the war in Sudan was termed a “genocide” by U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell. Three efforts have been implemented to ensure peace and alleviate further violence: the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the Darfur Peace Agreement and the East Sudan Peace Agreement.
None of the efforts have been deemed successful and the situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate.
